Take part in a hands-on workshop dedicated to exploring the expressive possibilities of botanical toning in cyanotype printing.

We’ll start with the classic cyanotype process, hand-coating watercolour paper and arranging organic materials to create striking contact prints. After developing your images, we’ll move into the transformative phase of bleaching and toning, using natural teas and plant-based ingredients to shift the traditional Prussian blue into layered, earthy tones.

You’ll experiment with at least two distinct toning techniques while learning how to intentionally guide colour shifts and refine your results.

What You’ll Learn:

• How to hand-coat watercolour paper with cyanotype chemistry

• Designing thoughtful compositions using organic materials for contact printing

• How to determine proper exposure with a UV light source

• Developing, bleaching (with soda ash), and toning prints using teas and botanicals

This workshop is ideal for participants who already have a foundational understanding of the cyanotype process and are ready to expand their practice.

Weather Note

Cyanotype printing relies on UV light. If cloudy weather is predicted, the workshop will be conducted indoors using a UV lamp.

Materials

All materials are provided. Please bring an apron or wear old clothes, as the process can stain fabric.

You are also welcome to bring flat objects to experiment with, such as: dried or fresh flowers and leaves, feathers, lace, and other interesting flat textures,
